Research Techniques for Media

BTEC Media Research Unit

BARB research television programmes for the UK television figures.

It’s a great website for the channel companies, advertising companies and the TV Programmes to get a real insight on how many are viewing their programmes.

If a particular TV programme is getting low viewings it may suffer budget cost or even may get taken off the channel. Advertisers can pay less as less people are watching. The same method apply to if a programme in particular was getting brilliant views then maybe the budgets would get raised and advertising cost could go up.

BARB is regularly updated on a weekly bases and TV companies and channel owners are really obsessed with BARB as they are fascinated on what people and watching.

Looking through the website I found out that BBC1 channel is most view out of the 5 primary channels. Looking at Eastenders figures it clear that there is a consistent following and their are more viewers when there is a big storyline I notice the figures go up which I imagine Eastender TV company must check regularly to see whether there doing a good job and keeping Eastender watchers entertained.

Overall I think BARB is a great research components that benefits everyone in the TV and broadcasting industry. It tells TV channels whether shows are doing well and to see what can moved or swapped to get the best of there channels for example putting on their highest rated programmes on prime time. It helps the owners of the TV shows to keep track on their viewings. From advertisers they get to see wheres the best place for their TV adverts to go according to TV viewings. Also could be helpful from a consumers point of view as they could see what everyone’s watching and maybe tune into the most popular TV show that everyone’s watching. It puts TV shows into figures and doesn’t hide and truth therefore shows that aren’t getting watched get removed and gives upcoming shows a chance and every show gets paid fairly as the more viewers they get the more they get paid from adverts so all in all BARB is great and benefits the TV industry to move forward.
